New York Times bestseller David Arnold returns with a poignant love story about two teens whose souls come together time and again through the ages—for fans of Nina LaCour and Matt Haig.
Evan Taft has plans. Take a gap year in Alaska, make sure his little brother and single mother are taken care of, and continue therapy to process his father's departure. But after his mom’s unexpected diagnosis, as Evan’s plans begin to fade, he hears something: a song no one else can hear, the voice of a mysterious singer . . .
Shosh Bell has dreams. A high school theater legend, she’s headed to performing arts college in LA, a star on the rise. But when a drunk driver takes her sister’s life, that star fades to black. All that remains is a void—and a soft voice singing in her ear . . .
Over it all, transcending time and space, a celestial bird brings strangers together: from an escaped murderer in 19th century Paris, to a Norwegian kosmonaut in low-earth orbit, something is happening that began long ago, and will long outlast Evan and Shosh. With lyrical prose and original songs (written and recorded by the author), I LOVED YOU IN ANOTHER LIFE explores the history of love, and how some souls are meant for each other—yesterday, today, forever.

In this powerfully heartbreaking speculative love story by Arnold (The Electric Kingdom), two teens are inexplicably drawn to each other across all their previous lives. Following his father’s abandonment and his mother’s breast cancer diagnosis, high school senior Evan Taft is reluctant to apply for his dream gap-year experience in Alaska. Meanwhile, recent high school graduate Shosh Bell drinks to cope with her older sister Stevie’s death; the loss makes her desire to pursue acting at USC feel insignificant. Evan and Shosh are strangers living in the town of Iverton, Ill., when, one day, they both begin hearing a mysterious voice singing haunting lyrics that provide directions to an unknown event. Interstitial chapters depict the two teens as they are pulled together across historical eras and continents throughout their past lives; the songs only they can hear act as a consistent grounding thread. Arnold’s prose is both lyrical and devastating (“Love had run through this house like blood through a vein”), and the narrative’s focus on love and its apparent inevitability helps to lighten the intense tragedies the characters face. Shosh and Evan read as white. Ages 14–up. Agent: Daniel Lazar, Writers House.

Narrators Michael Crouch, Carlotta Brentan, and Sigrid Zeiner narrate this hopeful story of love past and present. Shosh and Evan lead aimless lives until they are brought together by a song only they can hear. Brentan crafts a weary, sardonic voice for Shosh, a former theater star who is struggling with alcoholism and grief. The song leads her to Evan, a teenager whose anxiety and family troubles have him reconsidering his postgraduation plans. Crouch's youthful voice for Evan never disappoints; his pace and pitch wonderfully capture the introspective teen. Listeners are treated to various performances of the mysterious song--Brentan, in particular, performs a delightful acoustic version. Zeiner lends her eloquent voice to interludes between chapters that chronicle soulmates brought together by the same ethereal force. J.E.C. © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine
