      The death of a child is every parent's worst nightmare, but for Catherine and Nathan Osgood the horror is magnified when they lose both their young sons in an accident caused by a disastrous decision on Nathan's part when he and the boys are late heading home after a day spent in the woods surrounding their mountaintop home in Maine. The misfortune derails the couple's otherwise idyllic marriage as Catherine's anger and Nathan's anguish mire them in recrimination and remorse. Catherine holds Nathan responsible, and Nathan's guilt is all-consuming to the point of self-destruction. With the help of wise and compassionate counselors, friends, and family, however, each learns how to cope with the demolition of one world and contemplate the creation of another. Friedrichs' flawless first novel is a nuanced study of the aftermath of a family tragedy. He succeeds in navigating an emotional minefield with exceptionally acute insight and respectful subtlety, ultimately mitigating the profound vulnerability and suffering such a cataclysm provokes with valiant writing that feels authentic and true. Emotions run high; keep the hankies handy.
